Iowa Legislature Adjourns

The Iowa legislature failed to pass SAN-supported, pro-hobby legislation in 2022 prior to the adjournment of the session. To follow is a brief summary:
 

• Legislation (S.S.B. 1156/S.F. 419) to allow certain vehicles to display a single license plate on the rear of the vehicle. Under the bill, eligible motor vehicles include those “registered as antiques or any vehicle that would require modifications including but not limited to adding or mounting hardware, drilling, or adding adhesives in order to secure a front registration plate.”  The bill passed the Senate, but the House Transportation Committee failed to consider the bill.
   
• Legislation (H.F. 2007/H.F. 2251) to allow the state to issue newly-created license plates inspired by vintage “year of manufacture” (YOM) offerings made available for vehicles registered as antique, including those with “limited use” plates. The bill passed the House Transportation Committee but the House Ways and Means Committee failed to consider the bill.
   
• Legislation (H.S.B. 619) to reduce the registration fee/tax for older antique vehicles from 5% of the purchase price to 2%. The House Transportation Committee failed to consider the bill.
   
• Legislation (S.F. 2336) to allow certain vehicles to display a single license plate on the rear of the vehicle. Under the bill, eligible motor vehicles include vintage (model year 1979 or older), reconstructed or specially-constructed vehicles built to resemble a vintage motor vehicle, and limited-production motor vehicles. The Senate Transportation Committee failed to consider the bill.
