West Virginia Introduces Bill to Expand Eligibility for Military Vehicle Titling

  • S.B. 479 creates a one-time $30 registration fee for military surplus vehicles. 
     
  • S.B. 479 defines “military surplus vehicle” as a wheeled, multipurpose or tactical vehicle, including a trailer, that was manufactured for military use by or under the direction the United States Armed Forces or Armed Forces of any other country and was subsequently authorized for sale to civilians. 
     
  • S.B. 479 recognizes the important historical and patriotic purpose of these vehicles.
     
  • S.B. 479 acknowledges that military surplus vehicles are becoming valued collectors’ items among the automotive community.
     
  • S.B. 479 would bring the state in line with others that are moving to allow former military vehicles similar accommodations as those available to civilian vehicles.
     

Overview: Legislation (S.B. 479) has been introduced in West Virginia to allow for the registration of military surplus vehicles. Currently, antique vehicle registration is available for military surplus vehicles that are more than 25 years old and owned solely as collector’s items. This bill, a version of SEMA military vehicle model legislation, awaits consideration in the Senate Government Organization Committee.
