Legislation has been introduced in the Maine State Senate (S.B. 13) to remove a provision in the law that requires that the overall diameter of motor vehicle tires be within 2 inches of the sizes recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The bill has been referred to the Joint Committee on Transportation for consideration.
We Urge You to Contact Joint Transportation Committee Members (List Attached) Immediately to Request Their Support for S.B. 13
- The Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection Manual already requires that a vehicle will fail inspection if a tire contacts any part of the body of the vehicle.
- S.B. 13 provides that a vehicle must still comply with applicable frame height requirements which vary according to gross vehicle weight rating. Because tire size will affect frame height, frame height limits can already effectively regulate against inappropriate tire size.
