UPDATE: Utah Bill to Extend Emissions Inspection Waiver Passes Legislature; Moves to Governor
DON’T DELAY! Please contact Governor Herbert Immediately to request support for H.B. 101
- H.B. 101 extends inspection exemptions to motor vehicles model year 1967 or older.
- H.B. 101 also gives individual counties the ability to extend emissions exemptions to diesel vehicles model year 1997 or older.
- H.B. 101 acknowledges the relatively minimal environmental impact of the vehicles targeted for this exemption. The idea behind exempting a class of vehicles is to reduce costs without losing emission reductions. This strategy builds support for emission inspection programs, but also directs finite resources to where they will be most valuable in cleaning the air.
Overview: Legislation (H.B. 101) was introduced in the Utah State Legislature to extend the emissions inspection exemption to vehicles that are model year 1967 or older as well as diesel vehicles 1997 or older. Under current law, all gasoline and diesel vehicles six model years or older must be tested biennially and all vehicles 1967 or older must be tested annually. The legislature passed the bill and it is being sent to the Governor for approval.
