UPDATE: Michigan Bills to Allow for Historic Military Vehicle Titling to Be Heard June 19th

DON’T DELAY!  Please contact the Michigan Senate Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure to request support for S.B. 344, 345, and 346:

You may use the following points in your message:

  • S.B. 345 defines “historic military surplus vehicle” as a military surplus vehicle that is over 25 years old, owned solely as a collector's item and for participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and similar uses, including mechanical testing, but is not used for general transportation. Use of the vehicle during the month of August each year is considered an exhibition.

  • S.B. 346 would exempt historic military surplus vehicles from inspections.

  • S.B. 344 would authorize the issuance of “olive drab” historic military surplus vehicle license plates that feature white lettering and a white star.

  • These bills recognize the important historical and patriotic purpose of these vehicles.

  • These bills acknowledge that historic military surplus vehicles are becoming valued collectors’ items among the automotive community.

  • These bills would bring the state in line with others that are moving to allow former military vehicles similar accommodations as those available to civilian vehicles.

Overview: Legislation (S.B. 344, S.B. 345, and S.B. 346) have been introduced in Michigan to allow for the titling and registration of historic military surplus vehicles. Currently, such vehicles are not able to be titled or registered for use on highways in the state. The bills are scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on June 19th.
