Louisiana Introduces Bill to Allow Military Surplus Vehicle Registration

- S.B. 549 allows for the registration and operation of military surplus motor vehicles.
- S.B. 549 defines a "Military Surplus Motor Vehicle” as a multipurpose or tactical vehicle that was manufactured by or under the direction of the U.S. Armed Forces for off-road use and subsequently authorized for sale to civilians.
- S.B. 549 allows for operation of a military surplus vehicle for the following purposes: occasional pleasure driving not to exceed one hundred twenty-five miles from the address the vehicle is stored; the participation in and transportation from off-road events, on-road club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, or similar events; and obtaining repairs or maintenance.
- S.B. 549 will create a special license plate specifically for military surplus vehicles.
Overview: Legislation (S.B. 549) allows for the registration and operation of military surplus motor vehicles. Under current law, there is no allowance for the registration of military surplus vehicles. The bill was introduced and referred to the Senate Committee on Transportation, Highways, and Public Works.
