Indiana Introduces Bill to Require Factory Installed or Equivalent Mufflers

DON’T DELAY!  Please voice your Opposition for H.B. 1417 immediately from the All Members of the House Roads and Transportation Committee by emailing now:

You may use the following points in your message:

  • H.B. 1417 would make illegal nearly all exhaust systems not of a type installed as standard factory equipment.

  • H.B. 1417 fails to recognize that factory replacement parts or comparables are not always readily available for all motor vehicles.

  • H.B. 1417 ignores the fact that aftermarket exhaust systems are designed to make vehicles run more efficiently without increasing emissions.

  • H.B. 1417 would make it difficult for hobbyists to replace factory exhaust systems with more durable, better performing options.

Overview: Legislation (H.B. 1417) to require all motor vehicles to be equipped with a factory installed or equivalent aftermarket muffler was introduced.  Indiana already requires that exhaust systems be “in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise or smoke.”
