Collector Cars Conquer Canada |
Automotive Heritage Recognized by Provinces
Canada celebrated its sesquicentennial on July 1, 2017, marking the 150th anniversary of its unification under the Constitution Act of 1867. Most people are aware that two official languages are recognized in the nation’s borders: English and French. While the sport of hockey is incredibly popular among the 36 million residents, the car culture is also well ingrained. As in the U.S., a genuine affection for vehicles new and old has taken hold over the past century.
The SEMA Action Network’s (SAN) expansion into the Great White North began in 2007. Groups like the National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada (NAACC), Specialty Vehicle Association (SVA), Manitoba Association of Auto Clubs (MAAC) and others have become valuable allies.

Proudly displayed at his club’s annual Fierorama car show, Jim Hallman’s Pontiac 1988 Fiero GT is pictured in the center.
The Northern Illinois Fiero Enthusiasts, Inc. (NIFE) car club was officially formed on Saturday, October 19, 1991. Eleven Pontiac Fieros gathered that day in Elgin, Illinois, to share a common interest in the mid-engined machine. Leading up to this date, president and founder Jim Hallman sought to gauge the interest in forming a club specifically for the Fiero. Thus, he mailed out letters to over 70 Fiero owners in the local area via the U.S. Post Office. “At the time, email was still a few years away—we didn’t even know the Internet existed!” Jim exclaims.
Although many years have passed, NIFE continues to provide an exchange forum dedicated to the care, preservation and positive publication of the Pontiac Fiero. The club is associated with the Midwest Fiero Clubs (MWFC), a Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA). Members assemble monthly for meetings or activities. Club gatherings include car cruises, shows, parades, regional and national Fiero events, picnics and fall tours throughout Illinois and the Midwest. They have maintained a club roster of over 300 Fiero owners each year since 1997. In addition to counting members in over 38 states, a number hail from Germany, Canada, Australia and Puerto Rico.
The image above was taken at NIFE’s annual car show, Fierorama. Over 75 Fieros gather each year at Pottawatomie Park in St. Charles, Illinois, to honor the marque. According to Hallman, it represents the largest gathering of Fieros in the world. “What makes our show unique is that the classes are broken down by mileage so that participants are competing against cars with similar wear and tear,” he says. “In recent years, club members in Denver, Colorado, have driven over 950 miles to participate! We had a special celebration to highlight our club’s 25th anniversary in 2016.” This year’s edition is just around the corner: September 10, 2017.
The merits of Collector Car Appreciation Day (CCAD) have been touted in the group’s publication, Fiero Focus. Supported by the SEMA Action Network (SAN), this automotive “holiday” is intended to celebrate the classics of the past and the future. Jim explains, “To our club’s membership, CCAD is an opportunity for car enthusiasts to be recognized by our governmental leaders. After all, it helps acknowledge that we are an important thread of the woven fabric that represents our grand old country.”
To Jim and fellow NIFE members, best wishes for a successful Fierorama 2017! We can’t wait to see some photos. . .
