Annual emissions inspections must be passed prior to registration and registration renewal in the counties of Hamilton, Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson and in the city of Nashville. 

Diesel Vehicles:
Diesel vehicles are treated the same as gasoline powered vehicles for emission inspection purposes.

Exemptions:
1. Pre-1975 model year vehicles
2. Vehicles with a GVWR of more than 10,500 lbs
3. Vehicles over 25 years old with antique registration and plates
4. New vehicles being registered for the first time
5. Electric vehicles

§ 55-9-202 Mufflers -- Muffler cutouts prohibited -- Penalty.

SECTION 1. (a) It is unlawful for a person to drive a motor vehicle on a road, street, or highway if the motor vehicle is not equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation. A motor vehicle's muffler is deemed to be not in good working order or in constant operation if the motor vehicle produces excessive or unusual noise or annoying smoke.

(b)  It is unlawful to use a "muffler cutout" on any motor vehicle upon any road, street or highway.

(c)  A violation of this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
 

SECTION 2. This act takes effect July 1, 2023, the public welfare requiring it.

License Plate

Antique

Available for vehicles that are more than 25 years old with non-modified engines and bodies. Vehicles may only be used for general transportation on Saturdays and Sundays.

YOM

Vehicles registered as "Antique" may display YOM plates with DMV approval. Antique registration plate must be kept in the vehicle and readily accessible to be produced upon request of any law enforcement officer.
