Former State Lawmakers Take Residency in Nation’s Capital
The start of a new a Congress brings the promise of new opportunities. The slate is wiped clean and all legislation must start from scratch. As a result of the November 2016 elections, many new faces have arrived in Washington, D.C. A total of 52 first-timers were elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and seven in the Senate, including a couple of lawmakers with a history of supporting the automotive community.
Newly elected U.S. Rep. Jim Banks (Indiana) and Rep. Ruben Kihuen (Nevada) have brought their four-wheeled ties with them from state legislatures. Each were members of the SAN-supported State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus. Having run successfully in their respective House districts, they have come to the nation’s capital to effect change from inside the halls of Congress.
Other State Caucus alumni have made equally impressive moves. Former Vermont State Senator Phil Scott was recently elected as governor of his state. Meanwhile, former Montana State Senator Ryan Zinke has landed as President Trump’s pick to head the U.S. Department of Interior, by way of the U.S. Congress.
The State Caucus helps identify lawmakers with an interest in the historical legacy of the automobile. Many of these legislators have sought to protect the hobby by improving existing motor-vehicle statutes and create new programs to safeguard and expand it. As state elected lawmakers pursue higher office in Washington, D.C., the benefits of building relationships with them early in their careers is self-evident.
