You may use the following points in your message:

  • S.B. 586 exempts ALL antique vehicles from exhaust system requirements

  • S.B. 586 acknowledges the minimal environmental impact of antique vehicles.

  • S.B. 586 recognized that factory replacement parts or comparables are not always readily available for all motor vehicles

  • S.B. 586 will allow hobbyists to make common exhaust modifications and replace factory exhaust systems with more durable, better performing options

Overview: Virginia S.B. 586 excludes antique motor vehicles, defined as motor vehicles 25 years old or older, from the requirement that such vehicles be equipped with an exhaust system in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual levels of noise. Current law only excludes antique motor vehicles manufactured prior to 1950 from such requirements and only allows an exhaust system originally installed by the manufacturer or an equivalent.
