Michigan Bill to Increase Registration Tax Approved by House

Legislation (H.B. 4736) to increase the registration taxes for most Michigan motor vehicles, including passenger cars, vans, light trucks, large "commercial" trucks, trailers, motorcycles, has been approved by the Michigan House.  Effective October 1, 2016, the bill would increase by 40% the value-based registration taxes levied on passenger cars, vans, and light trucks.  Registration taxes are assessed and collected when vehicle owners obtain new registration license plates from the Secretary of State or renew registrations.  The change would apply to all currently registered vehicles as well as to new registrations.  The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.

We Urge You to Contact Members of the Senate Committee of the Whole (List Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to H.B. 4736

• Under H.B. 4736, the tax increase would apply according to the vehicle’s list price, with more costly vehicles being taxed at a higher rate.

• The tax collected under H.B. 4736 would be used to fund state road projects.
