Iowa Bill to Expand Single License Plate Usage Introduced

  • S.F. 193 would save money, conserve resources and bring Iowa in line with other states that have moved to a single plate requirement.  
     
  • S.F. 193 would protect the aesthetic contours of collector cars and relieve vehicle owners of the burden of having to create mounting holes on some original bumpers.  
     
  • Current law only permits motor vehicles which are model year 1948 or older, and reconstructed or specially constructed vehicles built to resemble vehicles which are model year 1948 or older to display one registration plate on the rear of the vehicle. This bill would open up single license plates to all passenger vehicles. 
     

Overview: Iowa has introduced legislation (S.F. 193) that would allows all vehicles to display a single license plate on the rear of the vehicle. Current law allows single license plates on model year 1948 or older vehicles. The bill will be considered by a Senate Transportation Subcommittee.
